This is Joachim Klement, a German mathematician who gained international notoriety after guessing the champions of the last three editions of the tournament: Germany in Brazil 2014, France in Russia 2018 and Argentina in Qatar 2022.

Klement, who works professionally as an investment advisor in his country, developed a statistical model that combines multiple variables and that he relaunched for the next event. His conclusion surprised everyone and foreigners: for him, the team that will lift the cup will be the Netherlands.

An unprecedented champion according to the model

The choice of the Dutch has a clear basis for the mathematician. As he explained, the Oranje represents the nation with the greatest tradition and soccer weight among all those that have not yet managed to be crowned in a World Cup. The Netherlands played in three World Cup finals (1974, 1978 and 2010), but always fell short of the title.

On the path projected by Klement, the team led from Europe would beat Spain in one of the semifinals. Then, in the decisive match, they would face Portugal, who would reach the final after eliminating England in the other key. In this way, the podium of the tournament would be made up entirely of European teams.

The projected route for Argentina

The Argentine national team, the reigning world champions, also appears in the specialist’s predictions, although their path would be shorter than in Qatar 2022. According to the model, the Albiceleste would advance to the quarterfinals, where they would be eliminated by Portugal, the team led by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before that match, Argentina would beat Uruguay in the round of 16, in what would be a high-voltage South American duel. Klement also anticipated that he would be the only representative from South America to make it this far in the final draw.

The big surprise: Brazil eliminated early

One of the German mathematician’s most striking predictions involves Brazil. According to his analysis, the Verdeamarela would be eliminated in the round of 16 against Japan, one of the Asian teams that has been showing sustained growth in recent years.

Klement justified this projection by recalling the recent positive results of the Japanese national team: the historic victory over Germany in Qatar 2022, a 3-2 friendly win against Brazil in October 2025 and other victories against European rivals such as England and Scotland. For the expert, the Asian team is going through a moment of plenitude that positions it as a real threat to the traditional powers.

Other notable crossings

Klement’s predictions also reach other South American teams, all with adverse fates:

Ecuador would be eliminated by Senegal.

Colombia would fall to Croatia.

Uruguay would lose to Argentina in the round of 16.

The mathematical model behind the forecast

What makes Klement’s work particularly interesting is the methodology he uses to reach his conclusions. Their model combines a series of socioeconomic, sporting and even climatic variables to estimate the probabilities of each team.

Among the factors it considers are:

The GDP per capita of each participating country.

The size of the national population.

The cultural and social relevance of football in each country.

The position in the FIFA ranking.

The average annual temperature of the territory.

The home factor or advantage of playing as a host.

Regarding the climate variable, the mathematician explained in an interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel that extreme climates, both cold and hot, make it difficult to develop football as a mass practice. For him, the ideal temperature is around 14 degrees on average per year, a condition that is met in much of southern Europe and in regions of South America.

The luck factor and a tip for bettors

Despite his striking track record of success, Klement is the first to relativize the scope of his projections. The mathematician himself acknowledged that his model only manages to explain about 55% of the success of a team throughout a World Cup, while the remaining 45% depends on chance.

In a relaxed tone, he compared the activity of predicting a world champion to playing the lottery and warned that anyone who relies on his predictions to place bets would be making an unreasonable decision. This analytical humility is precisely one of the features that differentiates his work from simple media speculations.

We will have to wait for the development of the tournament in North America to know if the German mathematician gets his fourth consecutive success or if, on the contrary, one of the traditional favorites or an unexpected surprise ends up breaking all statistical projections.

The next 2026 World Cup, which will be played in the United States, Mexico and Canada, already has a favorite according to one of the most respected analysts in world soccer.
