For him, existence was not exhausted in material success or in the construction of a social identity, but reserved, for the second half of life, a much deeper spiritual task. Those born between 1945 and 1965, that is, the generation known as baby boomers, today occupy precisely that stage that Jung considered decisive: the time in which the soul demands to be heard.

A generation on the threshold of individuation

Jung maintained that life could be divided, broadly speaking, into two halves. The first is dedicated to building the ego: studying, working, raising a family, adapting to the demands of the world and consolidating a place in society. The second, on the other hand, invites a turn towards the interior. It is the stage of individuation, the process by which a person becomes who they really are, integrating the conscious and unconscious parts of their psyche.

For those born between 1945 and 1965, this transition is not an abstract issue. Many have already complied with external mandates – raising children, sustaining careers, facing losses – and now they find themselves with an inescapable question: what is still to live? Jung would answer that what is missing is precisely the encounter with oneself.

The Shadow: Facing What Was Left Behind

One of the central concepts of Jungian thought is that of the shadow, that part of the personality that has been repressed, hidden or denied over the years. In the first half of life, the shadow remains relegated because the ego needs to be strong and coherent. But in maturity, those rejected contents begin to emerge insistently: old resentments, unfulfilled desires, silenced fears, abandoned talents.

According to Jung, the ultimate spiritual mission consists, in part, in integrating that shadow. It is not a matter of destroying it, but of recognizing it, dialoguing with it and accepting that it is also part of the self. This integration releases an enormous amount of psychic energy that was trapped in repression, and allows us to live with greater authenticity.

Meaning as a vital need

Jung observed that many of his middle-aged and older patients were suffering not from obvious clinical conflicts, but from a loss of meaning. They had achieved what was expected of them, but they felt a void that was difficult to name. For him, this crisis was not a disease, but a calling. The psyche was asking for a new horizon, one that could not be bought or obtained from the outside.

This horizon has, in Jungian thought, a clearly spiritual dimension. Not necessarily religious in the dogmatic sense, but symbolic: the search for a connection with something broader than one’s own ego, with what he called the Self, the totalizing center of the personality.

Symbols, dreams and the inner voice

At this stage, Jung recommended paying attention to dreams, synchronicities and images that emerge spontaneously from the imagination. He believed that the unconscious spoke through symbols and that, by listening to them, we could receive guidance on the way forward.

Recurrent dreams: signals of contents that seek to integrate into consciousness.

Synchronicities: Significant coincidences that indicate moments of internal alignment.

Persistent intuitions: impulses that reveal a deeper calling.

Inexplicable nostalgias: clues about parts of the soul that have not yet been lived.

For those born between 1945 and 1965, many of these signs appear stronger than ever. Dreams return to childhood, old questions resurface and life invites an honest review of what has been done.

Transmitting wisdom: the figure of the inner elder

Another dimension of this final spiritual mission has to do with the archetype of the wise elder. Jung argued that older people have the task of becoming bearers of wisdom for the following generations. It is not a question of imposing advice, but of embodying a presence that guides by its example, its serenity and its understanding.

This generation experienced enormous historical transformations: wars, cultural revolutions, technological advances, changes in the family and at work. Their accumulated experience is a treasure for children, grandchildren and communities, as long as they are willing to share it from humility and not from rigid nostalgia.

Reconcile with finitude

Finally, Jung considered that accepting death was an essential part of spiritual maturity. Not as an absolute end, but as a horizon that gives shape and meaning to life. Those who manage to look their own finitude in the face can live the present more fully, let go of the unnecessary and dedicate themselves to what really matters.

Thus, the final spiritual mission for those born between 1945 and 1965, according to the Jungian reading, is not to achieve more things, but to be more fully oneself. It is a time to integrate the shadow, listen to the soul, share wisdom, and embrace the mystery. A silent, intimate, but profoundly transformative task, both for those who undertake it and for the world around them.

Carl Gustav Jung, one of the most influential thinkers in depth psychology, devoted much of his work to exploring the hidden meaning of human life beyond youth.
