The reaction was one of absolute rejection. In his eyes, they were too different. Her daughter was tall, beautiful, and self-confident. He, on the other hand, was noticeably shorter, quieter, discreet, spoke little and did not fit the image of the man she had always imagined by her side. Added to this were cultural differences, which scared her deeply. She was convinced that this union could not bring happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For months she tried to convince her daughter to give up the wedding. The discussions were almost daily. He repeated that another more suitable man would appear, someone “of his own.” The young woman’s answer was always the same, said calmly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, the mother waited for her to call. Then she hoped that the marriage would fail and her daughter would return home. But the years passed without either happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In all that time, mother and daughter did not exchange a single word. The woman frequently looked at photographs of her daughter’s childhood, but pride stopped her every time her hand reached for the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One night, he couldn’t take it anymore. With trembling hands he dialed the number. He listened to the tones for what seemed like an eternity. Beside her, her husband greeted her with a smile and, to her amazement, spoke to her in impeccable Russian:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Good morning. We have been waiting for your call for a long time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not knowing what to answer, the mother saw two small children running onto the scene who shouted with emotion: “Grandma!”,<\/em> almost without an accent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She learned then that her son-in-law had been learning her language for all those years, with one purpose only: that her children would be able to speak fluently with her the day the family was reunited. He never lost hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The daughter showed him the home where they lived. On the walls hung old photographs of the mother. On a shelf were carefully placed the gifts she had given her daughter years ago. In a soft voice, the young woman confessed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I never let the children forget that they have a grandmother. I always knew that one day you would call.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The mother felt ashamed. For five years I had judged a man only by his appearance, his height, and his origin. But that son-in-law turned out to be an attentive husband, a loving father, and, above all, someone who had never uttered a bad word about her in front of his daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two months later, the woman took a plane to visit them for the first time. At the airport, her son-in-law received her with a huge bouquet of flowers, while her grandchildren ran to hug her as if they had known her all their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That day he understood an essential truth: the greatest mistakes are made when we judge people not by their actions, but by our own prejudices<\/strong>.
