In a mocking tone, he asked his wife, Mariana, to put his slippers in his mouth<\/strong>. Her mother, sitting with her arms folded, smiled complacently, as if the comment confirmed everything she thought about how a wife should behave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What neither of them expected was Mariana’s response. She didn’t scream, cry, or argue. She quietly entered the kitchen and returned a few minutes later with a gesture that would erase the smile from her mother-in-law’s face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A white plate, two slippers and a lesson<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mariana appeared on the threshold of the kitchen holding a large white plate. On it, carefully placed, were her husband’s slippers. Next to it, a carefully folded napkin and, on top, a sprig of parsley, as if it were a dish served in a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doina was left with her mouth half-open. Ionu\u021b was looking alternately at the plate and at his wife, not quite understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You asked to be served,” she said calmly. I thought about doing things properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he tried to downplay it by saying it was a joke, Mariana responded with a phrase that would mark the rest of the night: “Then let’s laugh until the end.”<\/strong> He placed the plate on the furniture at the entrance and looked it straight in the eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words that had been saved for weeks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Doina tried to intervene by defending her son, claiming that it had only been a joke and that it was not such a big deal. But Mariana, without raising her voice, addressed her firmly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then he took the slippers from the plate, placed them on the floor, and calmly told him that he could put them on himself. Ionu\u021b bent down without a word, took off his muddy boots, and set them down by the door. When Mariana took the mop to clean the mud prints on the freshly washed floor, he gently removed it from her hands: “Leave me. I made the mess.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The mother-in-law without advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Doina watched the scene in silence. For the first time since he had arrived at that house, he had no advice to offer. As she passed by her, Mariana heard a murmur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “I didn’t mean to make you feel bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
