Jewelers won’t tell you! This completely restores the shine of silver! Cleans silver!

By Lesia

It’s true that there are some very effective, inexpensive methods for cleaning silver that you can do at home. Often, these methods are just as good, if not better, than some commercial cleaners. Here’s a popular and effective method that jewelers sometimes don’t emphasize:

The Aluminum Foil, Baking Soda, and Hot Water Method:

This method uses a chemical reaction to remove tarnish, and it’s particularly effective for heavily tarnished silver.

What you’ll need:

  • Aluminum foil
  • Baking soda
  • Hot water
  • A non-metallic container (glass or plastic)
  • A soft cloth

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the container:
    • Line the bottom of your container with aluminum foil, shiny side up.
  2. Add the ingredients:
    • Pour hot water into the container.
    • Add baking soda (about 1 tablespoon per cup of water) and stir until dissolved.
  3. Submerge the silver:
    • Place the silver items in the solution, ensuring they are touching the aluminum foil.
    • The tarnish will begin to transfer from the silver to the foil. You might see some bubbling.
  4. Soak and check:
    • Let the silver soak for several minutes, depending on the severity of the tarnish.
    • Check the silver periodically. If the tarnish is gone, remove the items.
  5. Rinse and dry:
    • Rinse the silver items with clean water and dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth.
    • Buff the silver with the cloth to enhance the shine.

Why this method works:

  • The baking soda and hot water create an electrolytic reaction with the aluminum foil.
  • This reaction causes the tarnish (silver sulfide) to be transferred from the silver to the aluminum.

Important considerations:

  • Not for all silver: This method is generally safe for sterling silver, but it may not be suitable for antique or delicate silver pieces. If your silver has gemstones, or other materials, it is best to consult a professional.
  • Avoid certain metals: Do not use this method with other metals, as it may cause damage.
  • Ventilation: While this method is generally safe, it’s always a good idea to work in a well-ventilated area.

This simple home remedy can be a very effective and affordable way to restore the shine to your silver.
