Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that feed on human blood. They are nocturnal and typically bite people while they are sleeping. Bed bug infestations can be difficult to get rid of, but it is possible with a combination of methods.

How bed bugs live:

  • Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects that are about the size of an apple seed.
  • They live in cracks and crevices in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and other furniture.
  • They are nocturnal and come out to feed on human blood at night.
  • Bed bugs can live for several months without feeding.

How to eradicate bed bugs from your house:

  • Clean: Wash all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and comforters, in hot water (at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit) and dry them on high heat for at least 30 minutes.
  • Vacuum: Vacuum all areas where bed bugs may be hiding, including mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, and floors.
  • Steam clean: Use a steam cleaner to kill bed bugs and their eggs in cracks and crevices.
  • Use a mattress and box spring encasement: This will prevent bed bugs from infesting your mattress and box spring.
  • Hire a professional exterminator: If you have a severe bed bug infestation, it is best to hire a professional exterminator.

Additional tips:

  • Inspect any used furniture or bedding before bringing it into your home.
  • Wash and dry any clothing that may have come into contact with bed bugs.
  • Seal cracks and crevices in your walls and furniture to prevent bed bugs from hiding.
  • Be patient. It may take several weeks or even months to completely eradicate a bed bug infestation.
