Your old scissors will be as sharp as a razor thanks to this simple trick
The scissors we use at home, whether they’re for cooking, sewing, or crafting, tend to lose sharpness over time, making cutting an increasingly frustrating task. But you don’t need to buy new ones or take them to be professionally sharpened.
With this simple technique and within everyone’s reach, you can recover the sharpness of your scissors using basic tools that you may already have at home.
Materials Needed
- A metal drill bit, preferably between 6 and 10 mm thick
- Spray lubricant, such as WD-40 (you can also use all-purpose oil)
- A clean cloth to dry and wipe the leaves
How to sharpen your scissors step by step
1. Prepare the workspace
I chose a firm, well-lit surface. Make sure the scissors are clean and dry before you start.
2. Apply lubricant
Spray some WD-40 or lubricant on the sharp part of the scissors. This reduces friction during sharpening and protects the metal.
3. Sharpen with the drill bit
He holds the drill bit with one hand, as if it were a thick pencil. With your other hand, hold the scissors open. Slide the sharp edge of each scissor blade along the bit, as if you were trying to cut it. Do this about 8 to 10 times per side, from the base to the tip.
Important: Keep the same tilt angle as the original scissor edge. Do not alter it to avoid damaging the cutting edge.
4. Clean and check
Use the clean cloth to remove any lubricant residue and possible shavings. Test the scissors by cutting a sheet of paper. If the cut is clean, the job is done. If not, repeat the procedure a few more times.
Additional tips:
- Don’t use the drill bit like a file. The movement should be similar to cutting, not side rubbing.
- Always work carefully. Although it’s a simple technique, you’re manipulating cutting tools and a metal drill bit.
- Avoid this method on serrated or sharp-edged scissors. It only works on conventional straight blades.
- Keep the scissors clean and dry. This prolongs its sharpness and prevents oxidation.
How often to repeat the process?
Depends on use. If you use the scissors daily, you can repeat this sharpening every 2 to 3 months. For scissors for occasional use, once or twice a year will suffice.
This trick is practical, effective and economical, ideal for keeping your scissors looking new without leaving home!
