Trick to repair the motorcycle seat with telgopor
Deterioration of a motorcycle seat is a common problem, especially if the motorcycle is exposed to the elements or is used frequently. Over time, it is normal for cracks, tears, or even internal foam to disintegrate. However, it is not always necessary to spend a lot of money on replacing it or taking it to a specialized workshop.
In this article, we show you an ingenious and homemade method to repair a broken motorcycle seat using inexpensive and easily available materials.
Here’s a description of this trick and a video that will show you how to do it:
Materials Needed
- Telgopor (expanded polystyrene): Material that will be used as a base for the mixture.
- Naphtha (gasoline): It will help break down the telepor.
- Rubber powder: It serves to give greater consistency and resistance to the mixture.
- Spatula or spoon: To apply the mixture on the seat.
- Sander or sandpaper: To give a smooth finish to the seat once repaired.
Steps for Repair
1. Preparation of the Seat:
Before you begin, it’s important to clean the area where you’ll be doing the repair thoroughly. Be sure to remove any dirt, old foam debris, or loose material. If the break is deep, it is recommended that you remove the pieces of deteriorated foam until you reach a solid base.
2. Create the Mixture with Telgopor and Naphtha:
In a container, place several pieces of telgopor (expanded polystyrene). Then, slowly add the naphtha (gasoline). You’ll see that the telgopor will begin to break down and form a viscous substance. This is the crucial step in the repair process, as this mixture will be what you will use to fill in the damaged parts of the seat.
Bonus Tip: It is important that you perform this step in a well-ventilated place, since gasoline emits vapors that can be dangerous if inhaled in large quantities.
3. Add Rubber Powder:
Once the telgopor has completely dissolved in the gasoline and you get a homogeneous mixture, it’s time to add the rubber powder. This material will give greater resistance to the mixture and make it more durable. Add the rubber powder a little at a time while mixing, until the substance has a thick, putty-like consistency.
Bonus Tip: You can find rubber powder in stores that specialize in car or motorcycle parts, or even in some hardware stores. If you can’t find rubber powder, you can crush an old inner tube to get it.
4. Application of the Mixture:
With the mixture ready, it is time to apply it on the seat break. Use a spatula or spoon to place the mixture in any cracks and damaged parts. Make sure to fill in all the empty spaces well and that the surface is level. Wait for it to dry thoroughly, which can take several hours depending on the amount of mixture applied.
Bonus Tip: If the break is very deep, you can apply the mixture in layers and add pieces of telgopor, letting each one dry before applying the next one. This will ensure that the repair is more resistant.
5. Sanding and Finishing
Once the mixture has completely dried, use medium-grit sandpaper or an electric sander to smooth out the repaired surface and level it with the rest of the seat. This step is important so that the seat looks as uniform as possible and the repair patches are not noticeable.
Additional tips: If you wish, you can cover the seat with a new vinyl or synthetic leather upholstery to give it a more professional and aesthetic finish.
This homemade method of motorcycle seat repair is a practical, economical and effective solution to extend the life of your seat!
