My Secret to Keeping My Mattress Clean and Making It Last Longer

By Vitia

Sleeping well depends not only on the mattress you choose, but also on how you care for it. Over time, mattresses can accumulate stains, bacteria, odors, and dust mites that affect not only their appearance but also your health.

That’s why today I want to share with you the homemade method I use to deep clean my mattress and extend its lifespan without spending extra money.

The secret to keeping a mattress clean and long-lasting

This simple and inexpensive technique not only removes visible stains but also combats hidden bacteria and germs. The key lies in a homemade active cleaning mixture that penetrates the mattress fibers without damaging them.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of white toothpaste (not gel)
  • ½ capful of liquid laundry detergent
  • 1 cup of clean water
  • 1 clean cotton cloth
  • 1 domestic iron

Step-by-step procedure:

  1. Prepare the cleaning mixture:
In a container, place the baking soda, toothpaste, and liquid detergent. Mix well until everything is combined. Then, add the cup of water and stir again until you obtain a homogeneous mixture.
  2. Apply to the stain:
Soak the cotton cloth in the mixture until it is thoroughly saturated. Wring out the excess liquid.
  3. Place on the mattress:
Spread the damp cloth over the stained area of the mattress. Make sure it is snug against the surface.
  4. Apply heat with an iron:
Heat the iron to a medium temperature (no steam) and wrap it in a thin cloth for added protection. Then, place it directly on the damp cloth on the mattress and hold it for a few seconds on each section. Gently iron the entire affected area for 2 or 3 minutes.
  5. Remove and let dry:
Remove the cloth and let the mattress air dry completely. If possible, place it in the sun or in a well-ventilated area.

Helpful tips:

  • Do it by zones: if the mattress is large, work in small areas to ensure you cover every part well.
  • Avoid excess water: an overly wet cloth can excessively dampen the mattress and cause unpleasant odors. Always wring it out before applying.
  • Do not use a very hot iron: a medium temperature is sufficient to activate the ingredients without damaging the fabric.
  • Repeat once a month: maintaining this monthly cleaning routine prevents dirt buildup and extends the life of the mattress.
  • Vacuum beforehand: if there is dust or debris, vacuuming before applying the mixture improves the results.

This trick has become part of my home cleaning routine. Not only does it keep the mattress like new, but it also improves the environment where we rest every night.
