10 Appliances that use the most energy when turned off

By Vitia

Myth, truth or solutions, a question that is also called the famous phantom consumption. That is, the appliances we have in our home that consume or use the most energy, even if they are turned off.

It is interesting to note how the International Energy Agency reports how electrical appliances turned off or in standby mode also consume.

In fact, they consume on average these devices in “stand by” mode, around 1.6 kilowatts daily. In other words, it is equivalent to a consumption of between 5 and 10% of the home’s energy expenditure. It is also called vampire current, because at night it becomes more evident and there is no device turned on.

However, there are steps we can take in this regard, such as outlets that can be turned off and those with sensors that disable unnecessary devices.

However, beyond what we can do, let’s get to know the 10 appliances that use the most energy when turned off:

The following are the electrical appliances:

1) Cable box

Cable TV service involves different energy consumptions, however the one that spends the most according to a study is the one that has the “with video recorder” mode.

2) Laptop or notebook

In the case of notebooks, these laptops can consume up to 8.9 w/hour. Even when in “sleep or hibernation” mode, it can consume up to 15.7 w.

3) Mini musical component

Generally, these equipment are made up of a radio and therefore are kept on, reaching a consumption of 14.4 W.

4) Desktop PC

If the computer is in sleep, its consumption will increase to 21.1 w. And if it’s on but useless and with the monitor off, it could use 73.9 w.

5) Coffee maker

In the case of the coffee maker, it consumes a little more than 1 w per hour, when it is plugged in but not in use.

6) Video game console

When the console is turned off but plugged in, consumption is around 1 w/hour. While if it is left in “ready to use” mode, a consumption of 23.3 w increases.

7) Rear projection and LCD TVs

As we know, LCD TVs tend to consume less energy, there are many different models as well as their characteristics and consumption. On the other hand, the type of television with rear projection uses twice as much as the old cathode ray model.

The common TV that is turned off, consumes about 2.88 w and the LCD, uses half.

8) Microwave

Pay close attention to the microwave, because its consumption could be much higher. In fact, its consumption could be multiplied up to 8 times if we leave its door open.

Specifically, its consumption is 3.08 w, but with the door open it rises to 25.79 w.

9) Cordless phone

It is interesting a fact about the cordless phone, if it has the answering machine, then its consumption is up to 2.9 w per hour.

10) Cell Phone Charger

In this case, when the cell phone charger is plugged in unused, it is the one that consumes the least. However, when we leave it charging overnight and it reaches 100% charge, it automatically stops charging. Only the charger does not stop consuming electricity completely.
