How to grow cinnamon to have an infinite supply

By Vitia

Cinnamon is a spice used all over the world, both in cooking and in traditional medicine. The cinnamon tree is grown in hot areas, especially in India and Sri Lanka. Yet it is also possible to grow it at home, saving money: below we explain how.

Cinnamon is propagated with seeds and cuttings. Put the seeds in a container full of soil, in a shady place. After about 4 months, you need to transplant them into a pot, which will be the final one, preferably to be placed outside. The height of the plant will depend on the size of the pot: if you have little space, opt for a medium-sized pot.

The cinnamon tree does not need direct sunlight, but it should not be placed in the shade. It is pruned periodically to prevent it from becoming too tall. In the cold months, try to shelter the plant from drafts, as they may “burn” it.

The first harvest takes place after about 2 or 3 years, every other year. When the branches reach 3 centimeters in diameter and a purplish color, they must be cut, about 5 centimeters from the main trunk.
