Imagine for a second that you are holding a raw egg. The egg white is transparent, liquid, almost perfect. You can see through it. Now think about what happens when that egg touches a hot pan: in a matter of seconds, the transparency disappears. The white becomes white, opaque, hardens. And even if you cool it down afterwards, you can no longer “undo” that cooking.
That image serves to understand something that many people are experiencing without realizing it: when vision begins to blur, it is not always “just age”. Many times, a process similar to slow cooking is occurring inside the eye, where the lens (the natural lens behind the pupil) loses clarity.
What is the lens and why does it become opaque?
The lens, when we are young, is flexible and transparent. It is composed mainly of water and proteins arranged in such an orderly manner that light passes unimpeded. The problem is that this lens doesn’t “feed” like other tissues, because it doesn’t have direct blood vessels: it depends on the balance of fluids around it. And there appears a silent enemy: excess sugar and certain eating habits that favor chemical changes within the eye.
Internal “caramelization”: the effect of glycation
There’s a process called glycation, which is easier to understand with a simple example: when sugar is heated, it melts and ends up becoming a dark, hard candy.

A practical idea: combine green leaves with a source of fat (because several nutrients are better absorbed that way) and add quality protein.

- Check labels: If you see “sugar,” “syrup,” “maltodextrin,” or refined flours in the first ingredients, it’s a sign.
- Switch without suffering: replace white bread with real wholemeal options, legumes, quinoa, sweet potato or potato with the skin.
- Cook judiciously: avoid repeated frying with refined oils; Prioritize olive oil (gentle cooking), ghee or butter, and techniques such as oven, griddle or steam.
- Hydration and rest: dry eye and eye strain worsen the perception of “fog”. Water, sleep and screen breaks help.
