The girl who borrowed from a mob boss to be her father for a day: a story of secrets and reunions

By Vitia

On a cold October night, the Verrone family’s mansion in Manhattan shone like few other times. Behind iron railings, crystal chandeliers lit up the polished marble floors, while a string quartet played an ancient Italian tune. Waiters circulated among guests dressed in gala dresses, offering glasses of champagne. Officially, it was a charity gala dedicated to art, an event that Damiano Verrone had founded six years earlier to support the city’s museums.

However, barely half of those present believed in that version.

A meeting with too many secrets

That night the leaders of four of New York’s oldest crime families had arrived. Don Silvio Marchetti watched the living room from the fireplace, while Don Emilio Castri remained near the bar. Beneath the elegance of the scene, every smile hid suspicion and every conversation had a hidden purpose.

Damiano Verrone moved through the crowd with a controlled calm. He never raised his voice: he had learned, long ago, that stillness could be more terrifying than anger. Three years ago, something had changed him completely. The wedding ring that she never wore remained stored in a drawer on the upper floor. Those who knew him before knew that even if he responded politely to every guest, he was no longer fully alive.

Rafael Conti, his most trusted man, watched from the stairs every entrance and exit. None noticed the small figure gliding from the service corridor.

A petition that silenced the room

The girl was wearing a blue cotton dress, somewhat faded. Someone had styled her hair in a hurry. He clutched a piece of cardboard folded several times to his chest, with a figure drawn in crayon: a crooked red heart and three people holding hands. She stopped at the edge of the marble floor, looked at the sea of elegant dresses and dark tuxedos, and took a deep breath, as children do when they have already made a decision.

He then advanced straight towards the most dangerous man in the room.

Damiano noticed it when it stopped three steps away from him. Rafael moved immediately, but he raised a hand to stop him. The girl unfolded the paper with trembling fingers and, in a barely audible voice, said:

“Can I borrow him to be my father…” just for a day?

The whole room fell silent. No one could believe that a girl would have dared to approach the feared mafia king with such a request. Everyone expected a cold answer or an order to the guards. Instead, Damiano knelt in front of her.

The motive behind the plea

The girl introduced herself as Sofia. She explained that her mother, Elena, worked in the house as a maid. The next day, his school would hold a family party where each child had to bring his or her parents. His mother had promised to attend, but she had to work. And the other children repeated that she didn’t have a father because no one had loved her.

Damiano asked where his mother was. Sofia pointed to the service corridor. Elena appeared seconds later, pale with horror, apologizing and explaining that the girl had escaped from her. But the man did not look at her: he looked carefully at the drawing. On the smiling female figure in the center of the paper was a small detail: a silver pendant in the shape of a rose.

His gaze froze.

A secret kept for three years

Damiano asked where that necklace had come from. Elena, instinctively, put her hand to her neck and replied that it had belonged to her sister, Lucia. That name hit him harder than any bullet.

Lucia was the woman Damiano had planned to marry three years earlier, the same woman everyone believed to be dead in a car accident a few days before the wedding. Elena, her voice breaking, revealed the truth she had hidden all along: Lucia had survived long enough to give birth. Before dying, he made his sister promise that he would hide the baby, as he had discovered that Damiano’s enemies were behind the accident.

Sofia was his daughter.

A murmur ran through the room. Damiano took the drawing with hands that, for the first time in years, were trembling. Then he looked at the little girl and said in a low voice:

“You borrowed from me for a day…” But I think I’ve already lost too much time.

A new beginning

The next morning, Damiano entered Sofia’s school holding her hand. Elena walked alongside them, still unsure of what that new future would be. He did not become a kind man overnight, and his enemies did not disappear either. But from that moment on, every decision he made had a purpose greater than power or fear: no one would ever take his daughter away from him again.
