No one knows that an old microwave is a gold mine! Try to take it apart and you’ll be surprised.

Creativity and ingenuity are pillars of DIY. A clear example is the project in which the components of a disused microwave are used to manufacture welding tools and even a homemade torch. This type of work not only shows what is possible with recycled materials, but also the importance of safety and innovation in the home.

Dismantling the microwave

The process begins with the complete disassembly of an old microwave, in order to remove the high-voltage transformer. This piece is the heart of the project, as it will be modified to convert it into an energy source capable of welding metals.

Transformer Modification

The original secondary winding of the transformer is cut and replaced with a much thicker wire. Thanks to this modification, the transformer generates a high amperage with low voltage, which is an essential condition for arc welding.

Bracket construction and cooling system

In order to be able to use it comfortably and safely, a wooden support is made where the transformer is attached. In addition, a fan is installed to help cool it, since the heat generated during operation is considerable.

Welding demonstrations

With the equipment ready, various tests are carried out that show the potential of the modified transformer:

  • Screw union by direct welding.
  • Attachment of a metal to a hammer, demonstrating strength in the joint.
  • Engraving letters on metal plates, using the power of the electric arc to mark the surface.

Building a homemade blowtorch

The project does not end there. Taking advantage of other simple elements, such as a glass container, a water pump, a battery and gasoline, a handmade torch is built.

Torch Test

The result is surprising: the torch generates an intense blue flame, capable of melting the surface of a can in a few seconds. This demonstrates how the combination of recycled materials and knowledge can produce tools with great capacity.

Tips and recommendations

  • Safety first and foremost: Working with transformers and gasoline can be extremely dangerous. Always wear insulated gloves, goggles, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Don’t improvise without knowledge: these types of projects require some experience in electricity and DIY. If you don’t have practice, it’s best to learn with basic guides before trying anything advanced.
  • Never use it indoors: the use of homemade blowtorches should be done in ventilated places to avoid poisoning or fire accidents.
  • Check materials: Make sure that the recycled components are in good condition and do not have structural damage that could cause failure.

This project demonstrates that with ingenuity and caution it is possible to give new life to objects in disuse, turning them into useful tools. However, safety should always be the priority when undertaking high-risk DIY jobs.
