Billions of welders are unaware of the secret of this incredible tool
Sometimes, the best tools are not bought: they are invented. This is demonstrated by this incredible homemade modification of a traditional adjustable wrench, which turns an ordinary tool into a true functional multi-tool.
With the simple addition of a bike chain and a strategic cut in the handle, this tool not only tightens nuts, but can also unscrew difficult parts and offer extra grip without damaging materials.
A brilliant idea for any home or professional workshop. In addition, you can follow the procedure in the following video on the WELD VTQ channel:
The starting point: a common key
It all starts with a standard-sized adjustable wrench, readily available at any hardware store. Its traditional design already allows it to be adapted to different diameters, but this project takes its functionality to another level.
Materials Needed
- Steel adjustable wrench
- Old bike chain (preferably clean and in good condition)
- Metal fastening tape or small screws
- Angle grinder or grinder for cutting the handle
- File to finish off the edges of the cut
- Metal lubricant (optional)
- Gloves and safety glasses
The modification process
1. Strategic cut on the handle
A cut is made in the handle of the adjustable wrench, with a specific shape in the shape of a “U” or semi-circular groove. This cut adjusts to the size of small or medium nuts, allowing the tool to also serve as a fixed wrench or quick nut puller.
2. Incorporation of the bicycle chain
The chain is securely attached to the end of the handle with screws or high-pressure metal tape. This chain can be used to hug tubes or cylindrical parts that cannot be clamped with traditional key jaws.
3. Adjustments and tests
The cut area is filed well to avoid sharp edges and the tool is tested with different nuts and metal elements to ensure its effectiveness. The result is an adjustable wrench with triple use: traditional adjuster, quick nut puller and flexible fastener.
Benefits and practical uses
- Expanded versatility: With this simple modification, you can work on worn nuts, pipes, or hard-to-reach parts.
- Time and space saving: By having several functions in a single tool, you reduce the number of items you have to carry in your box.
- Ideal for outdoor repairs: The chain easily adapts to irregular conditions, such as rusty pipes or recessed screws.
- Increased torque and force: Thanks to the new design, more pressure can be applied without the tool slipping.
Additional tips:
- If you’re going to use this tool frequently, consider applying an anti-rust protective coating to the exposed parts of the cut.
- Always keep the chain clean and lubricated for smooth operation.
- Mark the new cut with paint or an engraving to avoid confusion with other similar models.
- Use this tool only with compatible materials; Do not force it on soft parts such as plastic or thin aluminum.
