Even the oldest geranium will bloom. A proven method for abundant, continuous blooms
Geraniums are hardy and grateful plants, but to ensure they bloom lushly and for a long time, they require some key care. Whether your plant is young or old, with the right soil, a good fertilization routine, and timely repotting, any geranium can revive and bloom.
The secret is in the substrate
The ideal soil for geraniums should be nutritious, light, and well-drained. You can prepare a very effective homemade mix by combining:
- 2 parts purchased soil (100% peat)
- 1 part light garden soil
- 1/5 part worm castings or mature compost
- A little sand to improve aeration
This mixture ensures that the roots have the perfect balance of moisture and oxygen, which promotes vigorous growth and long-lasting flowering.
Transplantation is also important
Feeding isn’t enough: geraniums need to be repotted when their roots fill the pot. Do this once a year or every two years, depending on the plant’s needs. Use a slightly larger pot than the previous one to allow the plant to continue developing without stagnating.
Fertilization: when and how
- When there are no flowers or buds : fertilize every two weeks with a complete fertilizer according to the package instructions.
- When bud formation begins : intensify feeding and apply fertilizer every 7 to 10 days.
This stimulates the formation of abundant flowers, prolongs flowering and strengthens the plant.
Additional tips
- Sunlight : Geraniums love the sun. Place them where they receive at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
- Light pruning : Remove faded flowers and weak branches frequently. This encourages new growth and improves the overall appearance.
- Avoid overwatering : Water only when the substrate is dry in the first few centimeters. Overwatering can cause root rot.
With these simple and effective care tips, even the oldest geranium can be transformed into a radiant plant. Give your plant what it needs and you’ll see it bloom vigorously again, bringing color and joy to your home or garden.
