Jade Tree Plant Care

Jade trees are one of the easiest succulents to care for, however, there are certain details that need to be taken into account for this little tree to develop properly.

Jade tree care, whether potted or planted in the ground, will always be the same. If you’ve ever wondered how to properly care for a jade plant , we’ll share five essential care guidelines to keep in mind:

1- Light

Light is an essential element for the growth of this plant; it can be direct or semi-direct light, but it should not be lacking.

The difference in sunlight will quickly become noticeable; if exposed, its leaves will turn a bright, light green with reddish edges. If it doesn’t receive direct sunlight and is in semi-shade, its leaves will turn shiny but a deep, dark green.

So when looking for the ideal location for it, we recommend placing it near a window or directly outside. However, if you have it outside, be careful to expose it during peak hours, when the sun is strongest, as we run the risk of burning its leaves.

2- Irrigation

Like all succulents, this beautiful little tree doesn’t require much water. Remember, its leaves are fleshy because they accumulate water.

So it needs sporadic watering, as long as we water it every 15 to 20 days in winter and once a week in summer, it will be more than fine.

We must be very careful not to overwater it; its roots are susceptible to constant moisture, which can cause them to rot. Many recommend watering it with a spray bottle, but we don’t recommend it, as we may not be able to provide the necessary amount of water for its survival.

It is always key to pay attention to the texture of the leaf , if it feels soft it is because it needs water and if we watered it recently and it feels this way, it is because we are watering it too often. The leaves of our plant always speak!

3- Substrate

The soil is another key factor to consider. This is a plant that requires very good drainage because, as we mentioned earlier, its roots are very delicate and susceptible to waterlogging.

The substrate for a jade tree must be porous, so it should contain a mixture of sand, worm castings, volcanic perlite, and garden soil, among other ingredients. These are essential ingredients that a succulent should never be without.

Feeding twice a year is essential; it will provide the necessary nutrients for flowering. We can do this at the beginning of spring and throughout the summer. This way, our jade tree will grow large and beautiful with abundant, shiny leaves.

4- Pruning

Pruning is essential for these small trees, as it stimulates their growth. By removing unusable stems and leaves, the tree’s energy won’t be wasted and will be concentrated only on healthy stems and leaves.

Removing stems and diseased or dried leaves can also help maintain their shape. When doing this, the materials you use must be sterilized. We’ll also remove small stems and place them in the ground to form new plants. They reproduce that easily!

5- Reproduction

All succulents are very easy to reproduce, so we can quickly have a new plant, either to have in our home or to give to someone.

These succulents can be propagated either by leaf or directly by stem. Personally, I always propagate by stem; once we remove the stem from the mother plant, we place it directly in the soil. After a few days, the leaves begin to soften, but don’t worry!

Little by little, we’ll see our seedling take root, as we’ll notice the new leaves that begin to emerge. When our new plant is in this process, it’s necessary to water it more frequently.
