Just mix alcohol and red brick powder! What you should prepare at home

By Vitia

Over the years, multiple homemade techniques have emerged to restore or beautify wood without resorting to expensive industrial products. One of the most curious and effective combines two very accessible elements: alcohol and red brick dust.

This mixture not only gives a warm and natural color to surfaces, but also acts as a kind of light sealant that enhances the wood grain.

In this article, we show you how to prepare and apply this formula, as well as give you practical tips to achieve a durable and professional finish with simple materials that you probably already have at home.

You can also follow the procedure in the following video from the Secret Trick channel:

Necessary Materials

  • Ethyl or isopropyl alcohol (at least 70%).
  • Red brick powder (fine, no lumps).
  • Soft bristle brush or varnish brush.
  • Microfiber or cotton cloth for cleaning and polishing.
  • Gloves and mask (protection when handling dust).
  • (Optional) Additional clear glaze or varnish.

Detailed Steps

  1. Surface Preparation:
Lightly sand the wood with fine sandpaper (120–220 grit), removing debris and opening the pores. Then, wipe off the dust with a dry cloth.
  2. Product Mixing:
In a clean container, mix equal parts alcohol and brick powder. You should get a smooth, liquid paste, free of lumps. Adjust the consistency with more alcohol if it is too thick.
  3. Application
    • Use a soft brush to apply the mixture in the direction of the wood grain.
    • Work in small sections to prevent it from drying out prematurely.
    • Let the mixture sit for about 10–15 minutes to allow the pigment to penetrate well
  4. Removing Excess:
With a dry cloth, gently wipe to remove excess dust. The idea is for the pigment to stain the surface and the rest to be removed.
  5. Final Polishing (Optional):
Once the surface is dry (20–30 min, depending on humidity), wipe it with a cloth to smooth the finish and remove any residue
  6. Extra protection (recommended)
    • Apply a thin coat of clear vitrifier or acrylic varnish to seal the pigment and protect the wood.
    • Allow to dry according to the product instructions.

Additional tips

  • Mixing consistency : Ensure the powder is well sifted; lumps can cause stains or streaks.
  • Well-ventilated area : Alcohol emits fumes. Wear gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling dust.
  • Pre-test : Test the mixture on a piece of wood or hidden area to adjust color and absorption
  • Shade Variation : Control the ratio of powder to alcohol: more powder, more intense color; more alcohol, more transparent color.
  • Drying Time : Avoid applying direct heat. Allow to dry naturally for even staining.
  • Protective Layer : Alcohol evaporates quickly but does not provide strength. Varnish adds durability.
  • Maintenance : Clean with a slightly damp cloth. Reapply varnish every 1–2 years depending on use and wear.
  • Natural Alternative : For a natural finish, use linseed or tung oil after applying, instead of varnish.
  • Avoid Water Exposure : Although the pigment is fixed, since it does not contain polymers, it could flake off in humid conditions. Seal well.
  • Decorative Option : Useful for achieving an aged effect or very subtle reddish tones on furniture.
