Sugar-free pomegranate jam: delicious and super-healthy recipe

Sugar-free pomegranate jam is a great option for those who want to enjoy a genuine and natural preserve that is rich in flavor and health benefits. The pomegranate, with its sweet and slightly acidic taste, is a fruit that lends itself very well to the preparation of jams and marmalades, thanks to its natural sweetness and antioxidant properties.
Here’s how you can prepare it in a few simple steps, with easy-to-find ingredients and a little patience to get a tasty jam without the addition of refined sugars.
Ingredients
- 6-8 ripe pomegranates (about 1 kg of grains)
- 1 large apple (preferably organic)
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 teaspoon agar-agar (for thickening, optional)
Method
- Preparation of the pomegranate
- First, peel the pomegranates and remove the kernels. To make it easier, you can cut the pomegranate in half and immerse it in a bowl of water. In this way, the grains will detach more easily from the white membrane, which can be bitter.
- Extract the juice
- Once you have the grains, place them in a blender or potato masher to extract the juice. If you prefer a smoother jam, strain the juice through a sieve to remove the seeds. If, on the other hand, you like preserves with a rustic texture, you can leave the seeds as well.
- Add the apple
- Peel and cut the apple into small pieces. The apple is essential because, in addition to giving natural sweetness to the jam, it helps thicken the mixture thanks to the pectin contained inside.
- Cooking
- Place the pomegranate juice and apple chunks in a pot over medium-low heat. Add lemon juice, which is used to enhance the flavor and to better preserve the jam.
- Cook everything for about 30-40 minutes, stirring often. If you notice that the jam is too runny, you can add a teaspoon of agar-agar dissolved in a little hot water, and continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes, until it reaches the desired consistency.
- 🥡 Storing
- Once ready, pour the jam still hot into sterilized glass jars, close them tightly and turn them upside down to create a vacuum. Let them cool completely before storing them in the pantry.
Sugar-free pomegranate jam is perfect to be spread on rusks, added to yogurt or used to fill desserts. Thanks to the absence of added sugar, it is ideal for those who follow a healthy and balanced diet, without sacrificing taste.
