Cheek dimples: what they are, why they appear, and what science says about them
Those small indentations that appear on the cheeks when smiling have conquered eyes for generations. They are usually associated with tenderness, youth and joy, but behind their apparent simplicity lies a fascinating combination of anatomy, genetic inheritance and population variations. Far from being a simple aesthetic detail, dimples are the result of a particular muscular and skin architecture that is worth knowing in depth.
The anatomical origin of dimples
The explanation of these cavities begins in a specific muscle of the face: the zygomaticus major. Its usual function is to raise the corners of the lips when we smile, allowing that universal expression of joy. However, in certain people this muscle presents a very particular structural variation: it is divided into two independent fascicles or muscle bundles.
This bifurcation causes that, when contracting during the smile, the skin is tractioned unevenly. The result is that small visible depression in the cheek that we call a dimple. It is, therefore, a congenital peculiarity of muscle tissue, not a defect or a medical condition.
The role of subcutaneous tissue
Muscle anatomy is not the only determining factor. The thickness of the fat layer under the skin also has a decisive influence on the visibility of the dimple. When the adipose tissue is thinner, the cleft is marked more clearly. On the other hand, on faces with fuller cheeks, the dimple may fade or even disappear completely. This explains why some people notice how their dimples become more or less apparent based on weight changes throughout life.
A genetic inheritance that follows its own rules
If you have dimples, there’s a good chance you inherited them from one of your parents. Genetics specialists explain that this trait is transmitted under a pattern called autosomal dominant. In simple terms, this means that it is enough for only one of the parents to carry this characteristic for there to be a high probability that it will manifest itself in the children.
However, human genetics does not always behave like a perfect manual. There are cases of people who develop dimples without an obvious family history, as well as inverse situations in which they become blurred over the years. The skin’s natural loss of elasticity during aging can modify the appearance of these marks, making them less noticeable or changing their shape.
A surprising distribution in the world
Although many consider dimples to be an uncommon trait, statistics tell another story. Various studies carried out in different regions of the planet show striking figures on their presence:
- In Greece, about one in eight children has dimples on their cheeks.
- In certain communities in Nigeria, the prevalence exceeds 50% of the population.
- In other regions, the numbers vary considerably, with differences in both the frequency and location and shape of the indentations.
These geographical differences are explained by the combination of genetic factors specific to each population and marriage practices within specific communities. When certain genes are concentrated in a group, their physical characteristics—including dimples—tend to manifest more frequently among its members.
Myths and popular beliefs
Around dimples there are numerous cultural beliefs. In some traditions they are considered a symbol of good luck, special beauty or even blessing. Other cultures attribute meanings related to the character or destiny of those who possess them.
Nonetheless, science remains firm in its position: there is no evidence to support these ideas. Dimples are simply an anatomical feature, certainly attractive to many, but without any specific biological function. They do not indicate health, personality or fortune. Its value is purely aesthetic and cultural.
Can dimples be artificially created?
For those who dream of having dimples, cosmetic surgery offers an option called dimpleplasty. This procedure involves creating a small adhesion between the muscle and the skin of the cheek to simulate the appearance of an indentation when smiling. Although the technique is real and accessible, it has certain important limitations.
The result never manages to accurately reproduce the naturalness of a genuine dimple. In addition, like any surgical intervention, it carries risks: infections, visible scars, asymmetries or permanent results that may not coincide with what is expected.
Accept one’s own face
Perhaps the most valuable reflection left by these small facial marks is to learn to value the face as it is. The dimples, when they appear, are a lovely detail; and when they are not there, they do not detract from the beauty of any smile. Each face tells its own genetic story, and that uniqueness is ultimately what makes it unique. Before resorting to interventions to modify appearance, it is worth remembering that the authenticity of a sincere expression has a value that no procedure can replace.
