When a tanker truck travels down the road, the liquid inside it is constantly agitated and the dry air inside the tank brushes against the metal walls. This continuous movement generates a well-known physical phenomenon: static electricity. Although in everyday life these discharges are hardly annoying, in the context of a vehicle carrying thousands of litres of fuel they can become a huge risk. The main associated problems are:

  • Accumulation of electrical charges: Charges are concentrated on the metal surface of the tank as the vehicle moves forward.
  • Sudden discharges and sparks: if these charges do not find an exit route, they end up being released abruptly, generating small sparks.

  • RTR grounding systems: during loading and unloading operations, the truck is connected by a special cable to a fixed point in the station or plant. This ensures that static electricity does not accumulate at just the most critical moment, when the fuel is flowing.
  • Anti-static materials: Many components of the tank and its accessories are made of alloys and compounds that significantly reduce the generation of electrical charges.
  • Strict operating protocols: drivers receive specific training to operate these vehicles and respect internationally established safety procedures.

The combination of all these elements ensures comprehensive protection, both for the personnel handling the fuel and for the goods transported and the environment.

A small detail with a huge impact

It is fascinating to think that such a modest device can play such a decisive role. As the truck travels miles of asphalt, the chain works silently, constantly discharging electrical energy that could otherwise trigger a tragedy. It does not require sophisticated maintenance, does not consume energy and its cost is minimal, but its absence could put thousands of lives at risk.

This example demonstrates how, in the field of engineering and industrial safety, the most effective solutions are not always the most complex. Sometimes, applying basic principles of physics—such as electrical conduction and grounding—is enough to solve potentially catastrophic problems.
